2013 Genex Large Herd Summit

We've been in Greeley for the past few days at the Genex Large Herd Summit.

Genex brought together a group of 50+ progressive cattlemen from across the country for seminars, tours and brainstorming.

Some currently AI to Genex studs, some AI but don't purchase semen from Genex, and others maybe haven't AI'ed in the past but are looking to in the future.

The common denominator though has been; everyone here is progressive.

Everyone is striving to build a better cow herd, market calves to the best of their abilities, see industry change coming and adapt to and with it, and leave the industry better then when they entered it.

It's been a great couple of days, filled with great people.

We were hosted by JBS at their headquarters Thursday morning where we discussed trends in the industry and what the future beef carcass needed to look like; how genomics can be a driver in our industry & how the packer, feeder & commercial cattle industries need to work together more.

Later in the day we visited the Kuner Feed Yard and saw a completely renovated feed yard, and then we headed to the Budweiser brewery.  After a refreshing beer, we headed to CSU's ARDEC facility and learned more about feed efficiency and where the industry needs to head in terms of research.

Friday morning took us to the JBS Packing Facility where we got to see a facility that harvest approx. 5400 head of cattle/day.  As a commercial operator, it was helpful to see what the cattle we raise and feed actually look like on the rail.  The rest of the morning was spent in excellent discussion in a round table format.

Thank you to Mike & Patsy for letting us represent Double M,
and to the Genex crew for such a great experiences!
